May 26 – June 1
My weeknotes capture events, thoughts, and other items from the past week, typically focused on work. Learn more about weeknotes here.
My weeknotes will be weak this week. 😉 I just got back from the Code for America Summit and I’ve been working on a large assessment of the conference, with a detailed proposal for changes. I will release that this week. And it will ruffle feathers. Stay tuned here and on LinkedIn.
Meanwhile, a few bits and pieces from the week:
- We had the Memorial Day holiday on 5/26 and that was a godsend. I needed that 1 day off to prep for the final push into June.
- We made an agreement with the Auditor’s office to delay the start of a revamp of their dog licensing software until early 2026. Though I did review the state laws on the books to look for some clues.
- We’re still working on 2026 budget stuff, and the rumor is we’re being pressured to devise a total budget that is slightly smaller than 2025’s budget. Still not happy with the reasons behind this, but it’s definitely not the end of the world.
- I’m more concerned about the feds targeting our county and city for retaliation for our “sanctuary” status—that could be chaotic and unpredictable (the signature federal position on everything now).
- As noted above, I traveled to DC on Wednesday ahead of the Code for America Summit on Thursday and Friday. Then traveled home on Saturday. No flight issues. And successfully one-bagged it with just the Able Carry Max EDC (26L). It was a bit tight, but it worked.
- I absolutely loved this piece on LinkedIn about how generative AI is not going to get very far until we all have our data structures and interconnections cleaned up.
- I also loved this short video from the MIT Sloan School on how AI is absolutely not going to “wipe out” all manner of white collar jobs in the next few years. It will have some limited impact, and we have plenty to learn and plenty of experimentation to do, but there’s no mass wipeout coming our way. I posted about it on LinkedIn here. And the video is below:
