2025 Weeknote 39 : California Coastal Non-Trail

September 22 – 28

My weeknotes capture events, thoughts, and other items from the past week, often focused on work, but with personal stuff, too. Learn more about weeknotes.

I’ve been on vacation most of this week, and it’s a vacation without laptop or even tablet, so my post will be brief.

Professional weeknotes

  • I only worked 1 day before heading out on vacation this week, so no notes this time around.

Personal weeknotes

All I have is my phone, so my notes are limited, and I will fill in the blanks in my next weeknote. In the meantime, the short version…

  • We prepped the house for our house and pet sitter, then headed to California.
  • We flew into SFO, then used public transit to get all the way to Half Moon Bay for under $12 per person (and we could have done it for less than half that, but I wanted to try out CalTrain a bit.
  • We hiked north from Half Moon Bay and our hike ended 3 days later at Thornton Beach State Park after a tough day of sand hiking ended with a minor injury.
  • We then pivoted to 2 days in San Francisco proper, just aimlessly seeing sights, riding cable cars, and — a revelation — riding in Waymo driverless cars, which were a blast.

As I write this, we’re still in San Francisco and will be another day, flying back all day on 9/30.

As for the California Coastal Trail… I will have a harsh assessment to share when I have access to a keyboard. Suffice it to say we were not impressed and feel it could and should be vastly improved.

That’s it for now. We have a Cable Car, a ferry, and a Waymo to catch!

About this week’s header photo

This was one of just a handful of trail markers we saw on our hike. California is a long, looooooong way from creating a trail to rival something like the Camino de Santiago, where you see distinctive trail markers posted consistently to guide pilgrims on their way. Most of our navigation was a combination of AllTrails, Apple Maps, and just “keep the ocean on your left” and making guesses. Some of it was fun, but a lot of it was frustrating.
